Free computers in municipal buildings
On Saturday, November 21, 2020, the non-profit association “PCs für alle“ in cooperation with the Kinderfreunde Donaustadt twelve complete PC packages to families in the Josef-Bohmann-Hof.
The campaign is the result of the initiative of Kornelia Schrammel, who has been volunteering for the “Welcome Neighbor” project at the Bohmann-Hof for ten years, and Predrag Pljevaljcic, the Children’s Friends representative in the SPÖ Section 26 at the Bohmannhof.
"Over the past 10 years, I've welcomed around 500 families (also on behalf of the housing partners) to Bohmann-Hof, often accompanying them for years. Therefore, I'm also aware of the financial situation of most households. There are many children who can't do their homework and exercises properly—especially now during the lockdown—because of a lack of appropriate technical equipment. We've now at least partially remedied this," says Schrammel.
Peter Bernscherer from the association “PCs für alle" explains the background of this project: "Poverty is underestimated. Not every family can afford a computer. Especially in times of closed schools and the associated distance learning, every child needs access to a computer; otherwise, they risk being at an educational disadvantage."
The Children's Friends in Donaustadt describe the need for such assistance: "A computer and internet are now as important for learning as schoolbooks once were. Therefore, every schoolchild needs such access. As long as the education system cannot offer this to every child, we must step in. After all, children have a right to education and a right to participation, as stated in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which, incidentally, celebrated its 20.11st anniversary yesterday, on November 31th, and to which we feel committed," says Daniela Gruber-Pruner, chairwoman of the Children's Friends in Donaustadt.
Predrag Pljevaljcic, the Kinderfreunde representative at the Bohmann-Hof, is pleased that "together we have succeeded in organizing this type of technical support for children and their families at the Bohmann-Hof, so that they can continue to successfully keep up with school and social demands during this challenging and difficult time."
Above "PCs für alle"
The non-profit organization “PCs für alle" provides free computers to people who would otherwise be denied access to digital life. Donated devices are carefully refurbished and loaded with the most important software. The computers are then given to people who cannot afford their own computers. Schools and charitable organizations also receive the free PCs. More than 800 computers have been donated so far.
About “Welcome Neighbors”:
This initiative aims to welcome new families moving into Bohmann-Hof and support them in their daily challenges. All this is supported by the housing partners. Kornelia Schrammel, a resident of Bohmann-Hof herself, has personally welcomed around 500 families to date, and countless activities have been organized, especially for the children in this residential building.

The goal of Kinderfreunde is a good life for ALL children. In Donaustadt, we therefore operate 22 kindergartens and after-school care centers, 3 park childcare centers, 1 parent-child café, 1 family counseling center, 1 friendship children's group, 1 Red Falcons group, and offer many activities for children and their families throughout the year. Children who, for whatever reason, are facing difficulties are a matter close to our hearts.
