Aid mission to Rojava
Rainer Brim of the Caravan of Humanity , together with the organization HIRO, has launched a large-scale aid mission in northeastern Syria. He traveled to the Rojava region with a fully loaded semi-trailer truck to distribute donated goods originating from Austria.
The delivery included basic material supplies as well as resources for education and psychosocial support: 700 sleeping bags, 800 pairs of shoes, six pallets of clothing, wheelchairs, over 20.000 diapers, more than 1.500 kilograms of school supplies – including notebooks, rulers, pens, and 300 school bags – and toys and cuddly animals for approximately 3.000 to 4.000 children. In addition, 100 computers and 150 laptops were provided for digital infrastructure.
A particular focus of the mission was supporting the University of Rojava in Qamishli. Fifty desktop computers with monitors and 20 laptops were presented to Dean Dr. Munir. Following the Newroz New Year celebrations, a computer lab will be set up for students, offering free access to computers and the internet, as well as training sessions. Given that teachers earn an average of only 200 euros per month, this initiative is crucial for improving access to education.
In addition to distributing donations, the mission also has cultural and scientific components: Rainer accompanied the renowned political scientist Thomas Schmidinger during research for his upcoming book, conducted interviews with one of the last Assyrian families in the region, and supported the non-profit organization Artist Team with paints and toys, which offers therapeutic painting and play for orphaned and traumatized children.
In addition, discussions were held with local leaders – including the Speaker of the Jazira Regional Parliament, the former Minister of Health, and representatives of the Syrian Women's Council – to explore future project opportunities and the most important needs in the region.
